Keyboard Touchscreen

Touch Screen Keyboard is not a standalone program. This is Hot Virtual Keyboard with some new settings and two new keyboard types: alphabetic and alpha-numeric.

The touch keyboard will appear when you tap inside a text box when your PC is in tablet mode. To open the On-Screen Keyboard Go to Start, then select Settings Ease of Access Keyboard, and turn on the toggle under Use the On-Screen Keyboard. A keyboard that can be used to move around the screen and enter text will appear on the screen.

These changes were made to further emphasize the comfort of using Hot Virtual Keyboard on touch screen devices.

The alphabetic layout supports all the languages installed in your system (when you change the input language, the layout on the on-screen keyboard changes as well).

The alpha-numeric layout enables you to type numbers and 35 other characters: arithmetic signs, brackets, currency symbols, etc.

The touch screen keyboard has several advanced features that make typing on the touch screen faster and easier.

For instance, the program can automatically capitalize the first letter of each sentence. If you press a key on a touch screen, you will see a small tooltip window with the corresponding character in the area not covered with your finger.

You can also use for your touch-screen any of the 60 keyboard layouts included in the installation package.

What is a touch screen?

A touch screen is a computer display screen that is also an input device. The screens are sensitive to pressure; a user interacts with the computer by touching buttons or keys on the screen.

Touchscreen monitors have become more and more commonplace as their price has steadily dropped over the past decade. Touchscreens are popular in heavy industry and in other situations, such as museum displays or room automation, where keyboard and mouse systems do not allow a satisfactory, intuitive, rapid, or accurate interaction by the user with the display's content.

The development of multipoint touchscreens facilitated the tracking of more than one finger on the screen, thus operations that require more than one finger are possible. These devices also allow multiple users to interact with the touchscreen simultaneously. Multi-touch allows the user to interact with the device by placing two or more fingers directly onto the surface of the screen.

A dual-touchscreen is a computer display setup which utilizes two screens - either or both of which could be touch-capable - in order to display both elements of the computer's graphical user interface and virtualized implementations of common input devices, including touch screen keyboards. Usually, in a dual-touchscreen computer or computing device, the most persistent GUI elements and functions are displayed on one, hand-accessible touch screen (changing with the software application in use) alongside the virtual touchscreen keyboard, while the other, more optically-centric display is used for those user interface elements which are either less or never accessed by user-generated behaviors.

An on-screen keyboard (OSK), or “virtual keyboard,” allows the user to send keystrokes to the PC without the use of a physical keyboard. A mouse, touch screen, or other pointing device is used to “type” on the virtual keyboard on the monitor screen. On-screen keyboards are a great solution when an area rarely needs a keyboard or a physical keyboard is not accessible.

For the industrial touch screen user, an on-screen keyboard is particularly useful. Industrial HMI applications often present the user with screens and buttons for interaction with a PLC or other automation equipment, but occasionally the user will need to enter alpha or numeric data. An on-screen keyboard allows this minimal data entry without the need for a full dedicated keyboard. This saves money and reduces complexity.

Microsoft Windows has an on-screen keyboard, but the application falls short in some key areas. The Windows XP OSK cannot be customized or resized, and it still requires a physical keyboard for Windows Logon. The Windows 7 OSK can be resized, but like the XP OSK it cannot be customized. The W7 OSK can be used for Windows Logon, although in domain environments it is unable to render a CTRL-ALT-DEL command to allow login.

Many of our customers ask us where they can find a suitable OSK for use with our touch screens, so we tested some 3rd-party on-screen keyboards to find one that best fits our customers’ needs. In addition to overall suitability for use with our displays, we used also looked specifically at these criteria:

  • Customization – ability to create custom keyboard layouts and resize the virtual keyboard
  • Availability On-Demand – ability to keep the keyboard hidden until needed, saving desktop space
  • Windows Logon Support – ability to use the virtual keyboard to log on to Windows, and for users in domain environments to be able to log in using CTRL-ALT-DEL

Recommendations

Chessware’s Touch-It Virtual Keyboard is a great solution particularly for users in domain environments who need to log in using CTRL-ALT-DEL. The Touch-It keyboard is customizable, has on-demand availability (by default), and is affordable with a price of $19.95 as of this writing.

Although it doesn’t support CTRL-ALT-DEL log in on Windows 7 machines, the Comfort On-Screen Keyboard from Comfort Software is an excellent product and a great value at just $19.95 as of this writing. We really loved the keyboard interface and all of the pre-created keyboard options, and were impressed with the various additional features it has.
